Yoga with kids: myth or reality?

Mother and daughter training in a gym

Let’s make it clear: at the age of 3-6 years doing yoga is more about relaxing, learning to control your body and emotions, and … fun! No need to hurry up and dive into the deep yoga practice from such an early age, especially if you are not a certificated yoga teacher. It may be dangerous and harmful.

Is it really possible to practice yoga together with kids, we mean, staying in one space with your child who is not crawling on you, crying all the time “Mom, look how I can do”? Yes, it is!

When we practice yoga with children, we aim:

1. To awaken interest in yoga, regular practice, and physical activity.

Little children want to spend all the time with their mom, and they are keen on mimicking everything they see. If you used to practice yoga before and during pregnancy, there is no need to quit after the birth of a child. Even though it may be really hard at the beginning to explain that practicing is not hanging like a monkey or wrapping around you like a snake. Try hard and you’ll be rewarded.

2. To spend quality time together.

Doing yoga regularly will strengthen your relationship. After the kid will understand the boundaries and will try to do asanas himself, you’ll have a lot of funny moments together during your practice. Don’t be in a hurry. Start from 5-10 minutes.

3. To have fun by imitating animal poses.

Children don’t understand the benefits of asanas, but they may become passionate about mimicking animals. Cow and camel, cat and dog, snake, butterfly, and frog are just some of the asanas that your child will definitely like.

4. To learn more about your body without exaggerating.

Remember that it’s not an easy task for children to stay focused on one activity for more than 20 minutes. Don’t get upset or nervous if this time is not enough for your practice. Place a box with toys and books near the yoga mat and offer it to your child when he or she will be tired and will lose concentration. You’ll have some time to finish your practice.

5. To learn how to relax and the conception of mindfulness.

Little by little, we give our kids instruments of well-being and teach them how to face the stresses with patience, self-compassion, and wisdom. No doubt, this is a very important skill in today’s world.
